Jenny Berrisford

Biography Jenny spent several years as an academic librarian before switching to developing online learning content for a not-for-profit organization in early 2012. She became interested in the potential of online learning while studying for her Library and Information Masters at UCL. She created an online platform (using Moodle) for an international organization and developed extensive content (particularly on leadership development) for a global audience and supported users to collaborate online and in a blended learning context. Mary Bishop

Previous executive roles include Director of Learning, ACCA, where she launched a new syllabus in 2016 and co-led and launched an integrated Masters in Professional Accounting with the University of London (UCL) in 2015. As Business School executive, she designed transformation of change programs around academic development and internationalisation. As a senior leader in industry she was responsible for digitisation and accounting systems development, as well as the European funded research projects for Hewlett Packard Laboratories. Experienced in global delivery and digital transformation of education, Mary’s roles have included leadership and strategic responsibility for quality assurance and regulatory compliance in the UK and globally. Passionate about accessible education, Mary recently served on the government’s apprenticeship standard setting group for accounting and taxation, and was, until recently, on the editorial board for the European Association for International Education (EAIE). A Commissioner on the HE Commission, Mary was part of the recent enquiry into innovation in education which led to the report “One Size Won’t Fit All”, launched at the Houses of Parliament in September 2017. A Council Member for the Architectural Association, an education expert on the ACCA Global Forum for Education and a member of the JISC Student Experience Expert Group. A strong advocate of academic development, Mary is a Principal Fellow of the HEA. Focusing on enhancing the student and staff experience, Mary works with HE, commercial and professional education institutions in the UK and globally developing their education strategies in response to the drivers of change – in particular digitisation, globalisation, quality assurance and regulatory compliance and academic development and culture in transformation of change. |
Julian Bream
Julian coaches digital transformation for academic, professional and leadership staff across London’s HE, FE and Adult Learning sectors. His career started with studying Soft Systems Methodology in the 1980s, in NHS systems, then with University of London Computer Centre in the 1990s. Funded to set up with other experts in 2002, the Jisc Regional Support Centre for London has been central to sharing grassroots understanding and practice between IT and academic perspectives, helping to find common motivation and understanding. Anna Campbell

She has worked as a learning technologist in change management and worked extensively with individual professors to embed online learning into degree courses. She has also managed a large online initial assessment project for language assessment and worked with academics to integrate technology into the lecture and seminar room. Anna is lead tutor and assessor for an accredited teacher training course and has experience of providing staff training.She utilises Moodle in her own teaching and runs courses in social media use for promoting courses and businesses. As part of her work, Anna has presented her research at international conferences and has published her research. |
Mark Childs
BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics, PGCE (Further Education), MScEcon (Media Studies), MA (Practitioner Research), PhD (Education) Specialism Learner experience of TEL, particularly synchronous communication and online collaboration, learning design using TEL, staff development, curriculum design. Biography Since 1997, Mark has worked on nearly 40 technology-supported learning projects as an evaluator, manager and principal investigator, predominantly in synchronous online communication. In parallel to this he has had posts in academic development at Wolverhampton, Warwick, Coventry and Worcester Universities as well as running staff development sessions in Singapore, Oman and Ethiopia. His PhD in Education in 2010 was on learners’ experiences of presence in virtual worlds and he has written and edited several books in this field. In 2011, Mark began working as a freelance researcher and includes Hewlett Packard, the Field Museum (Chicago), the Tablet Academy, Leicester University and the Open University amongst his clients. |
Professor Gráinne Conole

Specialism The use of technologies for learning, including Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), new approaches to designing for learning, e-pedagogies, and social media. Biography Gráinne Conole is an independent consultant. Prior to this she was professor and Head of the Open Education Unit within the National Institute for Digital Learning at Dublin City University. She has worked at the Universities of Bath Spa, Bristol, Leicester, the Open University UK and Southampton. She has published and presented over 1000 talks, workshops and articles. Jessica Gramp
Bachelor Multimedia, Master Project Management, Master Digital Education Specialism Experienced Learning Technologist, Moodle developer, trainer, project manager and web developer with a focus on accessibility, online assessment and curriculum design. Biography Jessica trained as a web developer before moving in to the Digital Education field in 2004. Since then she has worked to support and develop the Moodle VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) to meet the needs of staff and students. Upon completing her project management masters, she led a number of projects at UCL (University College London) to improve online assessment processes and accessibility within Moodle. At UCL, Jessica led the development of the 2016 E-Learning Baseline and helped establish the UCL E-Learning Champions network, becoming editor of the monthly E-Learning Newsletter. She collaborated with the Disability Support Service to develop the Accessible Teaching Practices course, which is based upon Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. She also led the Accessible Moodle project to develop an accessible theme for UCL Moodle. She developed the prototype for the My Feedback report, which is now installed on over 450 Moodle installations worldwide. Jessica has led ABC learning design workshops in the UK, Denmark, Qatar and Australia, to help staff consider the use of technology in their teaching and (re)design courses from a student perspective. Recently, she has managed the Erasmus+ ABC to VLE project, working with 12 partner universities from across Europe, including Oxford, Sorbonne and the University of Amsterdam. Since 2012, Jessica has mentored staff to help them obtain their CMALT (Certified Membership of the Association of Learning Technology) and is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Rose Heaney

An enthusiastic user of social media in professional contexts, she is able to work creatively with staff to incorporate tools such as twitter in the online environment or in the classroom. Rose has also worked as an associate lecturer at the Open University, an outreach tutor on a community based ICT project, instructional designer on workplace e-learning projects and EFL teacher. Naomi Korn
BA (Hons) Archaeology and Prehistory, MA Prehistoric Archaeology Specialism Naomi Korn is one of the leading UK experts in copyright, compliance. Biography Naomi trained as an Archaeologist and was an Assistant Curator of Prehistoric Archaeology and Copyright Assistant at the Israel Museum 1995-2000. Naomi established NKCC in 2003, after having overseen copyright at the Tate from 2000 – 2003. She is the former Chair, Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance (LACA) from 2013 – 2017. During this period, she led the reform of the UK’s copyright laws on behalf of the cultural heritage sector, which resulting in new UK exceptions to copyright in 2014. She has also regularly represented the interests of the sector to UK Government Ministers and she regularly sits on Government advisory groups. From 2015-17, Naomi was a Trustee of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professional (CILIP), the second largest professional organisation for librarians in the world. Since 2012 Naomi has set the program and chaired the CILIP annual Copyright Conference. Together with Anne Buky, Naomi recently travelled to China for the British Council lecturing on copyright at the UK-China conference for Commercial Enterprise and Copyright Protection. Sheila MacNeill
Sheila MacNeill is an independent consultant specialising in the development of digital learning, digital capabilities and strategy. Sheila has over 20 years experience within education working in a range of national and institutional roles covering curriculum design, assessment and feedback, learning analytics, developing digital capabilities, learning spaces and almost everything else in between. Matt Phillpott

Biography I am an independent instructional designer, learning technologist, and trainer, with over a decades experience of working in and with the Higher Education sector. Bringing a strong level of creativity to any project, I enjoy problem-solving both technical and pedagogical issues with online and hybrid courses, and helping subject specialists to design and develop learning content. I offer knowledge and expertise but do so with a good amount of patience and care, and I bring with me a genuine desire to help. Sarah Porter
BA (Hons) Psychology and French, MSc Information Technology, Managing Successful Programmes Practitioner Status, graduate of the Leadership Foundation’s Top Management Programme. Specialism Digital strategies for education, change management, learning analytics and online distance education. Biography Sarah was Programme Director for e-Learning and then Head of Innovation at Jisc, the UK’s body for innovation in education and research technologies, until 2013. She initiated the JISC’s e-learning and online learning programmes for over ten years so has a deep and broad knowledge of the national and international approaches to online learning, has published and presented widely. She recently undertook research into the potential of digital technologies to support online learning at scale, publishing the book To MOOC or not to MOOC: building the future of higher education? (Chandos Elsevier, 2015). Sarah is a member of the UK Higher Education Commission and was co-Chair of their 2015 inquiry into data in higher education which led to the well-received report From Bricks to Clicks: the potential of data and analytics in higher education (2016). Sarah now works with universities across the UK to support the development of their strategies for digital education, and to conduct reviews of online learning systems and approaches. Recent projects have included supporting the creation of a new TEL strategy, research into user requirements for new online learning courses, and evaluation of the impact of online research systems. Professor Philip Powell
Philip Powell has been an academic for a number of years. Originally an information systems researcher, he moved into academic management in the early 2000s and has led schools/faculties containing business, management, computer science, economics, law and politics. He was Executive Dean, PVC (Enterprise and Innovation), and Professor of Management at Birkbeck, University of London for 10 years. Before becoming Dean in 2009, Philip was deputy dean of the School of Management at University of Bath having worked at the universities of Warwick, Adelaide, Southampton and Lisboa. He was appointed Dean at University of Hull and then Director of the Business School for the Creative Industries at the University for the Creative Arts – a start-up business school. At each institution he led restructured units that substantially increased student and staff complements while generating sustained surpluses. His research has resulted in over 360 published outputs in information systems, management, operations, and, more recently, higher education management. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Information Systems Journal. He has held an honorary chair in University of Groningen, Netherlands since 2006 where he is an Advisory Board member and held a visiting chair at the University of Stirling. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, of the Academy of Social Sciences, of the University of London’s Centre for Distance Education, of the HEA and is a Senior Scholar of the Association of Information Systems. He was president of the UK Academy for Information Systems. Prior to becoming an academic, Philip worked in insurance, accounting and systems analysis. His long-standing interest in skills development and opportunities for reskilling led him to sit on the Government’s Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. Philip now works as a lead assessor for the Office for Students. He has substantial experience in mentoring and is currently part of a University of London mentoring programme. He has launched many new programmes, often jointly with national and international, HE and commercial partners, some of which have won awards for innovation. |
Alison Robinson Canham
MA, BA hons, FCMI, PFHEA, FAUA, AFSEDA Alison is an educator, strategist and change agent with extensive experience in higher education and professional bodies. She has undertaken academic and professional development work in the UK, Europe, Australasia and South Africa. Alison specialises in individual, team and organisational development; strategy development; and project delivery. A qualified development coach and accomplished facilitator, Alison has been described as ‘inspirational’ and ‘motivational’. Niall Sclater

Daniel Scott
